CHARITY CONCERT

Padstones in association with

Wycombe Orpheus Male Voice Choir

will be staging a charity concert on:

Date:     Saturday 30th May 2009

Time:     7 p.m. for 7.30 p.m.

At Wycombe High School

Tickets cost £10 per person.

Any enquiries please call

either me - Sue Ogden, or Dorothy on

Phone:  01628 660872

The address to send requests to the box office is:

Padstones

Reedham House

Britwell Road

Burnham

SL1 8AG

It would be most thoughtful when making ticket requests by post that guests provide a stamped self-addressed envelope.  This will help us keep costs to a minimum.  Cheques should be made payable to Padstones.   If you are unable to attend and would like to make a donation all contributions will be gratefully received.

My last request is for raffle prizes.  We are really trying to raise our profile in High Wycombe and with the exciting new venture into providing intermediate accommodation at 104 West Wycombe Road any funds we can raise to help us with the start up costs will be really beneficial.

The choir is extremely popular and tickets will be limited so book early to avoid disappointment!

Best Wishes and in anticipation, many thanks for your support.

Annual Report 2007/08

The provision of accommodation and support for young people continued successfully during the year. The Charitable Company has now two fully staffed Accommodation Centres, Reedham House in Burnham and Havenfield in High Wycombe, giving 17 bed spaces. In addition, as nomination agent for South Bucks District Council, there is access to a further 12 bed spaces at the Slough Foyer. Move-on accommodation is available at a two - and a three-bedroom flat in Burnham and a further two-bedroom flat in High Wycombe. Finally, a specially designated member of staff, called a Floating Support Worker, provides assistance to those who have passed through the Charitable Company's Centres and information to those who ask for advice about accommodation and other issues.

The Development of Residents

Padstones' approach to its work involves working closely with each young resident towards restructuring their lives. To this end each new resident is allocated a 'key-worker' who agrees a Support Plan with the resident and oversees progress formally each week as well as providing help and advice as requested throughout their period of stay. It is essential that each young person accommodated commits either to full-time education or to training which will lead to employment opportunities. Throughout their stay Padstones' workers liaise closely with the statutory agencies and employers to maximise the opportunities available to the residents. During the year 29 young people left. The success of Padstones' approach can be gauged from the fact that 27 made a satisfactory move.

Here are some excerpts from a letter written by one of these 27:

"I just wanted to say a big thank you for everything you have done for me. It's a miracle that you were able to change a depressed, silly, stupid little girl into the grown up, confident, individual independent person I am to-day. I can't imagine the sort of person I would have been if it wasn't for you, your help and guidance has been so needed. I can't believe it's been a year and a half since I moved in, so much has happened and changed. You feel like a family to me I can't believe it's come to an end. I will miss everything even the rules and the rent! Keep up the great work - you are life savers."

The three move-on flats, two in Burnham and one in High Wycombe, have made a significant contribution over the years to making our young people ready for independent living. The flats are supervised by our Floating Support Worker but the young people in them have responsibility for almost all of their living arrangements.

Many of the young people in the Burnham Centres have studied at the East Berkshire College at Langley. The College's help, especially in designing custom-make courses to suit our young people, is gratefully acknowledged. Several young people at Havenfield have been on further education courses at Amersham and Wycombe College. Others have had work experience through Hayden Training, a training company which works in collaboration with the local Job Centre and now have jobs. Some of our younger residents are still at school and have been sitting GCSE and 'A' level examinations.

Volunteers and staff have continued to organise extra-mural activities such as ten-pin bowling, barbeques and five-a-side football matches. This year, as an experiment, Padstones organised three one-day and two half-day outings instead of the usual five-day Caravan holiday. The highlight was the day-out to London, going on the London Eye and visiting the London Dungeon - although for some the best on a day out experience was going on a Tube train for the first time! The residents were fully involved in the decisions for these days; the consensus at the end was that we should revert to the Caravan holiday and that will happen again in May 2008. As usual, there was a Christmas dinner in a local restaurant for all residents in mid-December and birthdays were celebrated as they occurred throughout the year.

Annual Report 2006/07

This was a year of steady progress.  Occupancy at Reedham House, Burnham, and Havenfield, High Wycombe, and our three move-on flats has been higher than anticipated.  Our service offers those young people in need of a roof over their head, for whatever reason and with no foreseeable alternative, an opportunity to access accommodation with support.  Young people who are assisted and nurtured whilst accommodated at Padstones are actively encouraged to work towards and achieve their own personal goals in life. As providers of accommodation Padstones is aware and is active in homelessness prevention programmes. We are now considering whether more provision should be made and, if so, how this might be achieved.

The Development of Residents

Padstones' approach to its work involves working closely with each young resident towards restructuring their lives. To this end each new resident is allocated a 'key-worker' who agrees a plan with the resident and oversees progress formally each week as well as providing help and advice as requested throughout their period of stay. It is essential that each young person accommodated commits either to full-time education or to training which will lead to employment opportunities. Throughout their stay Padstones' workers liaise closely with the statutory agencies and employers to maximise the opportunities available to the residents. During the year 29 young people left. The success of Padstones' approach can be gauged from the fact that 26 made a satisfactory move. Only one left for an unknown destination, one was returned to their referring agency and a further one left prematurely to live with a friend.

The three move-on flats, two in Burnham and one in High Wycombe, have made a significant contribution over the years to making our young people ready for independent living. The flats are supervised by our Floating Support Worker but the young people in them have responsibility for almost all of their living arrangements.

Others have had work experience through Hayden Training, a training company which works in collaboration with the local Job Centre and now have jobs. Some of our younger residents are still at school and have been sitting GCSE and 'A' level examinations. Two residents achieved University places to study Nursing. One of them was awarded the Windsor and Maidenhead Young Volunteer of the Year Award.

Volunteers and staff have continued to organise extra-mural activities such as ten-pin bowling, barbeques and five-a-side football matches. Once again, Padstones took residents away for a short holiday; ten residents plus five staff spent a most enjoyable holiday based on a Caravan Park Centre at Thorness Bay on the Isle of Wight in May 2006. In addition, we had a day-out at Thorpe Park with 13 residents. As usual, there was a Christmas dinner in a local restaurant for all residents in mid-December and birthdays were celebrated as they occurred throughout the year. Residents are actively encouraged to participate in the running of their home and hold regular meetings to discuss day to day issues and plan events.

Residents' Holiday - 2005

Residents’ holiday on the Isle of Wight in June:  The awards were for the untidiest room, the person who used the mobile the most, the happiest person on holiday and the one who knew it all!  This was a fun ceremony on the last evening when we all went out for dinner.  Everyone is especially thankful to the Trustees for making the holiday possible.

Chilterns American Women's Club

Big thank you

Members of the Chilterns American Women's Club Holiday Bazaar (CAWC) who hold monthly meetings at the National Society for Epilepsy headquarters in Chesham Lane, Chalfont St Peter, have thanked the charity for the use of their hall by handing over some of the £10,440 raised from an annual Christmas bazaar.

The money raised has been split equally between Padstones, a Buckinghamshire-based charity for the homeless, and the NSE which plans to buy residents leisure equipment such as specially-adapted bicycles and games for their John Lewis social room, opened last year.

An NSE spokesman said: "The CAWC's continued moral and financial support is invaluable to us. CAWC members have raised in excess of £70,000 for us during more than a decade of involvement"

THE CAWC "HOLIDAY BAZAAR"

The CHILTERNS AMERICAN WOMEN'S CLUB (CAWC) will hold its fabulous annual HOLIDAY BAZAAR on THURSDAY 18 NOVEMBER 2004, from 9 am - 2:30 pm in the Main Hall of the National Society for Epilepsy in Chalfont St. Peter. Monies raised from this year's Holiday Bazaar will go to:

The National Society for Epilepsy (45%)

Padstones - Caring for Homeless Young People (45%)

The Federation for American Women's Clubs Overseas (10%)

This year's Holiday Bazaar is expanding to include more than 50 outstanding craft vendors from across the UK, offering shoppers a wide range of gifts and products to suit every taste. Says Bazaar Chairperson, Marichi Racela-Smith, "Building on the wonderful success of last year's Bazaar - which enabled us to donate over £11,500 to our designated charities - we have been able to expand this year's Bazaar by increasing the number of vendors in attendance to 50.  We have increased the size of our marquee where we hold our Country Café, our Bake Sale, the Krispy Kreme sale, and our Just A Second sale.  This larger marquee is enabling us to create a mini food hall with selected fine food and drink vendors, which we hope our shoppers will enjoy."

Returning to the Bazaar is an innovation from last year that proved to be a big hit - the CAWC Gift Basket section. CAWC members have packed and wrapped over 100 themed baskets for sale that make perfect gifts - such as teacher appreciation or hostess gifts - for the holiday season. The baskets range from gourmet food baskets, to spa baskets, to kids' baskets. Prices start from £5.

Also returning to the Holiday Bazaar, after a huge success last year, are KRISPY KREME doughnuts. Last year, the Krispy Kreme doughnuts sold out completely before noon and many people had to go away disappointed. In order to avoid disappointment this year, shoppers are encouraged to pre-order their Krispy Kreme doughnuts by downloading the order form on the CAWC website (see below). Pre-orders will be available for collection on the day in the marquee.

This year's Bazaar Raffle will feature over 50 great prizes, including three wonderful top prizes: a 1-week stay at the Orlando World Centre Marriott Resort, a £350 Travel Voucher from Thames Valley Travel, and an exquisite quilt handmade by CAWC members.  Raffle tickets are on sale now and will be available on the day. The prize drawing will take place in the afternoon; tickets holders need not be present to win.

The CAWC has a 17+ year history of welcoming and supporting ex-pat families who have settled in the Chilterns.  Although club membership is primarily North American, approximately 20% of membership comes from the rest of world including Australia, Sweden and Britain.  The club is committed to supporting the Chilterns community by raising funds to support local charities. To date, the annual CAWC Holiday Bazaar has raised in excess of £134k for the club's designated charities, including £70k alone for the National Society for Epilepsy.

There is a £1 suggested donation at the door.  Please note that due to space limitations and fire regulations, prams and pushchairs cannot be allowed inside.  The CAWC looks forward to welcoming friends and visitors to the 2004 Holiday Bazaar.  For further information on the Bazaar, the raffle, or to pre-order Krispy Kreme doughnuts, please visit the club website at: www.cawc.co.uk.
